The Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) on Thursday 29th August 2013 summoned factory owners in the country to a meeting aimed to discuss issues relating to the review of standards of alcohol imported and manufactured in the country.

At the meeting held in the Conference Room of the Bureau in Freetown, the Director SLSB, Mr. James S. Dumbuya said the Bureau can now boast of a Laboratory that is capable to check the quality and standards of alcohol, water and food and non-food items manufactured in and imported into the country.

He said it has come to the attention of the Bureau that the country’s market is full of expired and counterfeit products, especially food items, whilst assuring that the Laboratory will be used to test all food and non-food items sold in markets across the country.

Mr. Dumbuya revealed that they will start the process by first of all conducting a nationwide survey on the percentage of alcohol (whether imported or homemade) circulating in the country and further ensure that it is reduced.

He said the process is expected to reduce the increasing percentage of young people consuming and misusing alcohol in the country.

National Director for Health Network Sierra Leone, Mr. Robert K. Kargbo in his short statement revealed that his network is in full support of the initiative.

He said alcohol and other harmful drugs being imported or manufactured in the country have negatively affected the future of young people in Sierra Leone, adding that young people between the ages of 10 and 35 are highly involved in the misuse of alcohol which has resulted to the increasing rate of violence among youth in the country in the recent past.

Factory owners present at the meeting assured the Bureau of their commitment and support to ensure that the initiative is realized
